Our Mission

Accelerating Science for California and Beyond
The mission of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) is to accelerate world-class science and deliver transformative regenerative medicine treatments in an equitable manner to a diverse California and the world.
This commitment began 20 years ago when Californians approved Proposition 71, setting aside $3 billion to establish CIRM as the first state agency dedicated to advancing stem cell research and therapies. By laying the groundwork for cutting-edge innovation, CIRM became a key player in driving progress in the field.
In 2020, California voters reaffirmed their support through Proposition 14, providing an additional $5.5 billion to continue CIRM’s mission. This funding has expanded the agency’s ability to address diseases with high unmet medical needs while fostering a vibrant biotech ecosystem.
Achieving the Mission
CIRM’s work embodies the vision of Californians, benefiting not only the state’s residents but also people worldwide.
From funding clinical trials to establishing the infrastructure that drives research and development, CIRM’s work has impacted countless lives, fueled innovation, and helped make cutting-edge therapies more accessible to patients.
As the agency moves into its third decade, it remains steadfast in its commitment to accelerating regenerative medicine for the well-being of Californians and the world.
