Art Torres Appointed to Two New Roles on the University of California Board of Regents

Oakland, CA – Art Torres, former California State Senator and current Vice Chair of the Board of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) has been appointed as the new President of the Alumni Association of the University of California (AAUC).

The AAUC has more than two million members worldwide. The mission of the association is to enrich the lives of alumni and engage them as volunteers and advocates who contribute to the vitality of their communities and strengthen the University of California.

As President of AAUC, Senator Torres says he will be reaching out to foreign chapters in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and Mexico and South America to match alumni wishing to work abroad.

Senator Torres has also been appointed the Alumni Regent. The one-year appointment makes him a full voting member of the University of California Board of Regents. Both the AAUC President and the Alumni Regent role are pro bono.

“I am honored to be serving in these dual roles as a UC Santa Cruz and UC Davis alumnus, working with my fellow Regents which include our Governor, Lt. Governor, Assembly Speaker and President Pro Tem as well as our Superintendent of Public Instruction and our President Dr. Michael Drake and our ten Chancellors,” says Senator Torres.

In addition to being on the CIRM Board, Senator Torres served as the longest serving state Democratic Party chair in US history between 1996 and 2009. During his twenty years in the California Legislature, he chaired the Assembly Health Committee, the Senate Insurance Committee, founded the Senate Toxics Committee and chaired the UC Admissions Committee. From 1974 to 1982, he served in the California State Assembly and in the California State Senate from 1982 to 1994.

Senator Torres serves as one of five members of the board of Covered California which oversees Obamacare in California, appointed to a four-year term in 2016, by the California State Senate.
