Impact Across California
CIRM is the driving force of innovation and collaboration in the field of regenerative medicine.

Achieving the way forward.
For two decades, CIRM has been at the forefront of regenerative medicine, funding over 100 clinical trials and building the infrastructure that drives innovation in stem cell and gene therapies.
By empowering researchers, clinicians, and patients, CIRM continues to accelerate the development of life-changing treatments. From advancing groundbreaking research to expanding access for underserved communities, CIRM is shaping the future of medicine and making cutting-edge therapies a reality.
Our Focus is on Three Key Areas:
Research and Development
Pioneering Innovation Across the Research Spectrum
Established in 2004 to accelerate stem cell treatments for patients with unmet medical needs, CIRM funds the full spectrum of research, from early discovery studies to clinical trials. By supporting foundational research, CIRM has advanced our understanding of numerous conditions, paving the way for the development of more effective therapies.
Research projects to address a wide range of health issues, from arthritis to Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, rare diseases in children, heart disease, and stroke.

Clinical Trials
Clinical trials are vital steps on the path to U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of new therapies for patients.
Education
Fostering Talent and Creating Jobs
CIRM’s funding programs are intended not only to improve the health and well-being of patients but also to promote economic growth by attracting scientific talent, additional funding, and commercial enterprises as research and development progresses.
We fund programs that provide valuable educational and training opportunities in regenerative medicine for students and young professionals from backgrounds representative of the diverse communities of our state. Hands-on research and structured mentorships empower aspiring scientists to pursue rewarding careers in regenerative medicine.

Patient Access
Advancing Research for Communities
CIRM is the first state-funded institute dedicated to making the transformative potential of regenerative medicine accessible to those who need it.
CIRM collaborates with patient advocates and community leaders to shape the direction of our work. From our board to research guidance panels, patient and community advocates are included at nearly every level to ensure these perspectives are included in the development of our programs.
In addition, CIRM’s Accessibility and Affordability Working Group is developing solutions to enhance access and affordability, while new programs are being launched to expand access across California,.
CIRM supports nine medical centers with staff experienced in cutting-edge clinical trials in regenerative medicine therapies.

Growing the California Economy
CIRM promotes economic growth in California by attracting scientific talent, funding infrastructure, and growing a diverse workforce to drive progress in the regenerative medicine field. These actions drive economic output plus employment and tax revenue and unilateral benefits to the state. Such benefits in turn are amplified by co-funding, partnerships, follow-on financing, IPOs, mergers and acquisitions, and other such forms of leveraged funding.

$25+ billion Investments
