Spotlight on Macular Degeneration: Seminar by David Hinton, M.D.

David Hinton, M.D., spoke at the “Spotlight on Macular degeneration,” an educational event presented at the CIRM Governing Board meeting on April 29, 2009. Hinton has a CIRM grant to study the therapeutic potential of retinal pigment epithelial cell lines derived from human embryonic stem cells for retinal degeneration. Hinton is a professor of pathology, neurosurgery, and ophthalmology at the Keck School of Medicine of USC.

Hinton was introduced by Martin Pera, M.D. Pera gave a historical perspective on the initial evidence that derivation of retinal epithelial cell lines from human embryonic stem cells was possible. Pera is professor of cell and neurobiology at the Keck School of Medicine and director of the Eli & Edythe Broad CIRM Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research at the University of Southern California. He has a CIRM grant to develop techniques for creating high quality new human embryonic stem cell lines.

The CIRM-hosted event was presented at the University of Southern California in partnership with the Keck School of Medicine of USC.
